Shopify 'Crawled - currently not indexed': what it means and how to fix it
You opened Search Console, clicked into Pages, and found a pile of URLs under 'Crawled - currently not indexed'. It sounds like a bug. It isn't. It's a verdict.
It means Google came, read the page, and decided it wasn't worth adding to the index right now. Annoying, but fixable, once you understand what Google is actually telling you.
What the status actually means
There are two different 'not indexed' problems and people mix them up. 'Discovered - currently not indexed' means Google knows the URL exists but hasn't bothered to crawl it yet, usually a crawl-budget or priority issue. 'Crawled - currently not indexed' is worse in a way: Google did visit, did read it, and passed.
When Google crawls something and still leaves it out, it's making a quality call. The page didn't clear the bar. So the fix isn't 'beg Google to index it', it's 'give Google a reason to'.
The usual culprit: near-duplicate pages
On Shopify this is almost always variant and filter URLs. Every colour, size and filter combination can spin up its own URL, and they're near-identical to each other. Google sees fifty versions of the same collection and indexes one, leaving the rest as 'crawled - currently not indexed'.
That's Google working correctly, not a fault. You don't want those thin duplicates indexed anyway. The fix is making sure your canonical tags point filtered and variant URLs back at the clean parent page, so Google consolidates the signal instead of drowning in copies.
Thin pages that don't earn their place
The other big cause is pages with almost nothing on them. A collection that's just a grid of products with no words. A product with the manufacturer's copy-paste description that already exists on forty other sites. A tag page Shopify generated automatically that nobody meant to publish.
Google has a finite index and no reason to store a page that adds nothing new. Add real, specific copy to the pages you actually care about, and let the auto-generated junk stay out. Not every URL deserves to be indexed, and trying to force it wastes the crawl budget of the pages that do.
Internal links are how you vouch for a page
A page with no internal links pointing at it looks unimportant, because you're telling Google it's unimportant. If the only route to a page is the sitemap, Google reads that as 'even the owner doesn't link to this'.
Link to the pages you want indexed from places that already have authority: your homepage, your main collections, related products, relevant blog posts. A page that's well-linked from the rest of the site is far more likely to clear the bar.
What to do first
In order: confirm the affected URLs are ones you actually want indexed (half of them usually aren't). Fix canonicals so duplicates consolidate. Beef up the thin-but-important pages with real copy. Add internal links to them. Then, and only then, use 'Validate Fix' in Search Console or request indexing on the specific URLs that matter.
Requesting indexing on a thin page just gets it re-crawled and re-rejected. Fix the reason first, then ask.
NOT SURE WHICH ONE'S COSTING YOU MOST?
'Crawled - currently not indexed' isn't Google being difficult. It's Google telling you which pages aren't pulling their weight. Listen to it, fix the few that matter, and let the rest go.
