Why ChatGPT recommends your competitor instead of you
You asked ChatGPT to recommend a store in your niche and it happily named three competitors and not you. It stings, and it's becoming a real source of lost sales as more people shop by asking an AI first.
The good news is the reasons are knowable, and none of them are 'the AI hates you'. Here's how these systems pick who to mention.
AI recommends what it has read about, not what exists
An AI assistant doesn't browse the whole web fresh for every question. It leans on what it absorbed in training plus, for live search, a handful of pages it trusts. If your store barely appears in the sources it draws from, you're simply not in the pool it picks from.
Your competitors aren't being chosen because they're better. They're being chosen because they're more present in the material the AI reads.
You're missing from the sources AI trusts
AI answers about 'best X for Y' lean heavily on roundups, comparison articles, Reddit threads, and niche forums. That's where the AI sees a store named alongside a recommendation. If your brand never comes up in those places, the AI has no reason to surface you.
This is the uncomfortable bit: getting recommended by AI is partly a PR and community job, not just an on-site SEO job. Being talked about off your own site is now a ranking signal for the AI layer.
Your own pages aren't quotable
When an AI does look at your site, it wants a clean, liftable answer: what you sell, who it's for, why it's different, in plain sentences. If that's buried under a slideshow and marketing fluff, the AI can't extract a tidy claim to repeat.
Pages that state things clearly ('We make X for Y, made from Z, shipped from the UK') give the AI something to quote. Pages that are all vibes give it nothing.
Machines need to be told what you are
Structured data (schema) is how you spell out, in a format a machine reads without guessing, that this is a product, this is the price, these are the reviews, this is the brand. Without it, an AI is inferring what your page is, and inference favours the sites that made it easy.
Add product, organisation and FAQ schema. It won't make you famous overnight, but it removes the 'the AI wasn't sure what this page was' excuse.
What to do
Get named on the sources AI reads: pitch roundups, answer questions in your niche's communities honestly, earn comparison mentions. Make your key pages quotable with clear claims and FAQ content. Add schema so machines can parse you. Then re-test the AI question in a month.
You're not trying to trick the AI. You're trying to become one of the obvious, well-documented answers it can safely give.
NOT SURE WHICH ONE'S COSTING YOU MOST?
ChatGPT recommends the stores it has read about, described clearly, in places it trusts. Become one of those and you stop being the store the AI has never heard of.
